The CannulaideŽ

Nasal CPAP seal and attachment made easy.

Infant Nasal CPAP is on the rise.

As many as 10% of all babies born in the US can benefit from some degree of breathing support. For some infants treatment is needed only for a few hours while for others it may be needed for several months. CPAP has been widely used with these infants to reduce their work of breathing. Nasal CPAP is growing in popularity because it avoids intubation or tracheotomization, decreases the risk of nosocomial pneumonia; decreases sedation requirements; and improves the ability to tolerate enteral feeds. The Cannulaide, as an adjunct to this therapy, can improve the quality of the CPAP seal and may help reduce irritation to your patients.

Just as each brand of prongs is designed to fit the range of preemie babies, the Cannulaide, offered in five sizes, will work with the type you use, and with both across-the-face and over-the-head styles of CPAP set up.

Proper fit is key to minimizing irritation and trauma to the nares and nasal septum.

  • Cannulaide is sized to fit the cannula. This helps keep the prongs straight and positioned in the nares, away from the sides.
  • The pressure seal is maintained by Cannulaide rather than the infant's nose so there is no need for the prongs to touch the nose. When the seal is maintained against the patient's nasal mucosa, it is often necessary to switch to larger and larger prongs in order to maintain a competent pressure seal. Since the larger size prongs are farther apart, they add to the patient's irritation. With the Cannulaide making the pressure seal, you don't have to use the larger prongs and irritation is minimized.
  • The holes for the prongs have slits that increase the Cannulaide's ability to maintain its seal while the patient moves.
  • Cannulaide works with leading prongs to provide a reliable, observable air seal. Cannulaide is translucent to aid in inspecting the condition of the patient's nares, which should be done frequently.

Cannulaide increases the effectiveness of the seal.

Tests show that the Cannulaide significantly reduces leakage around the prongs when compared to using no seal and when compared to using hand-made seals.

Tests also show that the variability in seal leakage is significantly reduced when compared to using no seal and when compared to using hand-made seals.
